In Memoriam

Those who know me may recall that my brother, Jay, died in 1977 when he was 5 and I was 8. I've always known that death was part of life, and feel that we should "not let people truly die" by remembering them. I want this page to be very special, and am looking for ideas and suggestions. Please email me with comments, suggestions, or additions for this page. If you have someone you'd like me to add, please send me their full name, birth date if known (just the year is fine), when they did or would have graduated, and the date of their death (again, just the year is fine).

Marty Feuerstein, Former Principal of Boscawen Elementary School, Died October 3, 2002.
Submitted by Karen K. Sloane

In addition to being the Principal at Boscawen Elementary School, Marty was also close friends with my parents, and it was great having him and his wife, Pauline, around during my childhood. Marty was very active in the community, and was mayor of Franklin as well as a state rep. Marty always had a way of making you feel good about yourself. He lived a long and productive life, and for more details you can view his obituary from the Concord Monitor.

Tammy Ashley, Former Teacher at MVHS, Died January 5, 2003.

Rose Rafferty, who graduated with me, told me about Tammy's passing. I didn't know her well, but it was clear she was committed to education. Here is her obituary.

Jason Colby, Class of 96, died June 2003

Jason attended MV until he finished 8th grade. He was born in 1977 and graduated in 96 from Pittsfield High School. This is a link to his obituary: http://www.cmonitor.com/stories/news/record/obits2003/obits061103_copy_200310.shtml

Joshua Bowe, Class of 1994, December 24,1975 to June 27,1993.

Joshua was the second of three children born to bill and Arbie Jones Bowe ('64). He attended schools in Penacook and Webster and completed his junior year at Merrimack valley high school. His sense of humor and his fat belly were his trademarks. When he was about four he watched the leader of a shriners parade do a "belly roll". When josh got home he announced that he was sure he could do a belly roll too. After an hour of contracting and contorting his then thin little midriff he did manage to ripple the muscles up and down his body. When he was initiated into MV high school he proudly stood alone in the middle of the gym floor in front of 700 people and rolled his giant belly till the crowd was nearly in tears with laughter. From then on no pep rally was over "until the fat kid did the belly roll".

Josh had more serious accomplishments he was the state of NH Jr. Olympics champion with a .22 rifle in 1993. He competed nationally for three years and hoped to make the US Olympic team for the year 1996. He hoped to attend the University of Alaska and compete on their shooting team. He loved going to parties and riding around in his 1979 Chevy truck with its squeaky little aoooga horn. He laughed a lot. He was in the Explorer Scouts with the Hopkinton Fire Dept where he made a lot of friends from another whole school district. One sunny Sunday afternoon when Josh was driving his mom's brand new car Josh fell asleep behind the wheel, hit a tree and died instantly. Over 700 people attended his funeral because he touched so many people's lives. He was survived by his parents, his sister Jessica and his brother Jeffrey. He is missed every day.

Tony Byrne, Class of 91, May 3, 1973 to September 2, 1993

This was written by Tony's sister.

There may be few people who remember my brother as he was not a real go-getter, however many people in our town of Loudon remember him for a number of different reasons. He was a funny kid and grew into an even funnier adult with a very dry sense of humor. He was very active in the Boy Scouts as well as other community projects in Loudon. Those who knew him also knew he loved practical jokes. Tony died on September 2, 1993 at too early of an age and to the shock of friends and family. He is missed daily by those same people and remembered with smiles and tears alike.

Kris Hardy Martel, Class of 72, died May 2002

Steve Westgate, Class of 71, 1952-2001

This is an excerpt of his eulogy. Thanks to Barbara Corliss for sending it in.

...Son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. Leader, follower, team member, savior. Adventurous, humorous, industrious. A cartoon, a documentary and a love story. He got pleasure from doing for others.  He was a guy who would give you the last 3 bucks in his pocket, a guy who would change a flat tire for a stranger, or give you his car if he thought you needed it more than he did. He didn't ask for anything.  He earned everything he ever got.  He believed in working hard and living fully.  He'd give up his front row seat or back row seat if he thought it was better than your view from the parking lot.

He was very proud of his children and spoke of his 7 kids even in his last days when speech was becoming infrequent & more confusing.  He was able to keep his train of thought when it was a topic that he loved to share.  He never had a bad word to say about anyone.

He believed that it was Divine Intervention that brought he and his wife Diane together after being apart for so many years.  For Diane to be married to Steve was an incredible honor.  She cherishes and will carry their love forever in her gentle, patient way.

Through his battle with cancer he never complained.  He never asked "why me?"   He took every pill, every treatment, every needle and said "thank you" each time. He said that "if I don't win this battle, it's not from lack of trying". He didn't want anyone to be sad or feel sorry for him.  He explained "I'm like an old rusty schwinn with a loose chain and a broken pedal".  He said he was ready to lean his bike up against a fence and hop on a plane.

Steve was ready to go and at peace with his inner strength and power that has changed our life forever. For those of us that were around him during those last few months, it felt like we were witnessing a miracle.  He was so at peace and without fear or worry.  He worried more about all of us right up until the very end.

Billy Pearson, Class of 68 or 69, died 1972

This was written by Billy's friend Steve Littlefield.

In 1972, Billy Pearson, from the class of 68 or 69 was serving in the Air Force in Southeast Asia.  He was a crewman aboard a helicopter that was trying to pick up a downed aviator (a book was written about it and made into the move BAT 21 with Gene Hackman).  Billy and several other aviators died when his copter was shot down.  And just so you know, the motto of the Aerospace Rescue Service, to which he was assigned is ... SO THAT OTHERS MAY LIVE. Billy didn't live, but Iceal Hambleton, the downed aviator, did.

He leaves his wife Janet (Chase) Stone, of Penacook; two sons, Donald, Jr.; of Boscawen, and Mark Stone of Penacook; a daughter, Martha Stone of Penacook; two brothers, Philip Stone Jr, of Canterbury and Douglas Stone of Contoocook; a sister, Brenda Lakin of Warren; four grandchildren, Benjamin and Molly Stone, of Boscawen and Daniel and Kacey Stone of Penacook.
